Early Life of Abe Lincoln

Abe grew up on the farm and knew what hard work was.  He grew up poor.  Abraham didn't have much formal schooling.  The little schooling that he did have was spread out between Kentucky and Indiana, and equalled  less than a year; but he taught himself, reading and rereading a few books.  He had taken a flatboat to New Orleans twice and on the second trip in 1831 he settled in New Salem which is not far from Springfield.  There he started working in a store and managing a mill.  He gained everyones popularity real quickly by being so strong, his funny storytelling, and most of all his good character.  Lincoln was a partner in a grocery store that failed, leaving him in bad debt. He became a surveyor for a time, a village postmaster, and did alot of odd jobs, including rail splitting. He really wanted to improve his education and he studied law.
